Capturing Fleeting Moments: The Squire Family’s Newborn Session

Northern Utah Lifestyle newborn photographer

I get to photograph dozen of Utah families each month as a northern Utah Newborn Photogrpaher. But this shoot was especially tender for me, as it mirrored a stage in life that I know all too well. The Squires have a beautiful new addition and an energetic toddler, making them a family of two under two for a brief but precious time.

As a parent with kids who are almost exactly two years apart, it was a joy to witness the Squire family in the same phase I was in just a year ago. It’s a magical, if somewhat chaotic, time that’s filled with both the wonder of a newborn and the boundless energy of a toddler. Looking back at our own newborn photos, I’m always amazed at how much my children have grown and changed. It’s these very moments that we tend to look back on with a mix of nostalgia and disbelief.

During our session, we had the pleasure of photographing the Squire family’s sweet new baby girl and her nearly two-year-old big brother. He was absolutely adorable with his little sister, though, as toddlers are known to do, he had his own ideas about how the session should go. He was a bit nervous in front of the camera and didn’t always cooperate with our attempts to pose him just right. But such is the nature of photographing toddlers—they are wonderfully unpredictable!

Sure enough the very next morning Melissa posted a photo on her Instagram story of big brother snuggling his baby sister just as we had hoped to capture during the shoot. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, there are moments that are simply meant to be experienced and not necessarily captured. It was a beautiful reminder that while we strive to preserve every precious detail, some moments are meant to be lived in fully and not always caught on camera.

Through these sessions, I’ve learned that there are times when a moment’s beauty lies in its simplicity and spontaneity. When I can’t quite get the perfect shot or when a toddler doesn’t quite do what we hope, I try to remember that these moments are often meant to be savored rather than photographed. It’s in these fleeting instances that we can find the real magic—those authentic, unposed moments that make our lives rich and beautiful.

For the Squire family, I hope these photos become a treasured reminder of just how tiny and delicate your little ones are at this stage. And for anyone navigating the joyful chaos of life with a newborn and a toddler, remember that every day is filled with special, ephemeral moments. Sometimes, the most precious memories are those we hold close in our hearts, even if we don’t have a photograph to prove it.

Thank you, Squire family, for allowing me to capture a piece of your story. Here’s to cherishing every moment, whether captured or simply lived, and to finding joy in the beautiful blur of the early years.
